Description
Grassroots, all-volunteer group in Martinez . Works to promote mutual benefits for the community and the creek. 

Friends of Alhambra Creek partner with numerous organizations including: City of Martinez, Clean Water Program, Urban Creeks Council, Environmental Alliance, Contra Costa Watershed Forum, National Park Service, Martinez Unified School District (and individual schools), Shell Oil-Martinez Refinery, East Bay Regional Parks District, Friends of Franklin Hills, Muir Heritage Land Trust, Contra Costa Resource Conservation District, Alhambra Creek Watershed Action Group, neighborhood groups, County Public Works, Martinez Historic Society.

Friends of Alhambra Creek have participate in numerous projects including: Downtown Creek Enhancement, Strentzel Canyon restoration/flood protection, Junior High School Creekside Classroom, Native Pant Nursery, Alhambra Creek Watershed Management Plan, Alhambra Creek Watershed Festival, Alhambra Watershed Map, Alhambra Creek Enhancement Plan, Bioengineering workshops.

Monthly, 7-9pm at Martinez City Hall Board Room

Publications

  • Participated in publishing: Alhambra Creek Watershed Management Plan, Alhambra Creek Watershed Map, Saunter Along Alhambra Creek, Creek Care Guide, Watershed Tour Guide, Alhambra Creek tee-shirt.
  • Currently developing a Brochure on Friends of Alhambra Creek
  • Currently working on History of Alhambra Creek Video.

   
Volunteer Needs

  • People to raise, plant and maintain native plants and irrigation systems.
  • Historical researchers to find old records, family histories, photographs and illustrations having to do with Alhambra Creek and associate topics.
  • Photographers and videographers to provide visual records of events and projects.
  • Highly organized individuals to help manage a large volume of information and/or databases.
  • People skilled in developing grant-application-suitable documentation.
  • Web page designer/manager to help set up and maintain a web page.
  • Volunteers to participate in GPS/GIS surveys of the watershed.
  • Volunteers to conduct water quality surveys of the watershed.
  • Volunteers to conduct Bioassessment surveys of the watershed.
  • Volunteers to participate in creek cleanups.
  • Anyone interested in the creek is welcome.  If you want to do something for the creek, we’ll work with you to find a way.
  • Spring Creek Cleanup April 29, 9 AM to Noon , Staging at Martinez Adult Education Campus (Alhambra & F Street) – need volunteers to go in teams to drag dumped things out of creeks for City crews to pick up and haul away.  Be prepared to get wet & muddy and to have the satisfaction of working with others to clean the creeks.  Eligible for community service hours.

  • Anyone interested in the creek is welcome.  If you want to do something for the creek, we’ll work with you to find a way to use your skills, interests, capabilities.
