A mathematical model that transforms the locations of features on the earth’s curved surface to locations on a two-dimensional surface. It can be visualized as a transparent globe with a light bulb at its center casting lines of latitude and longitude onto a sheet of paper.  Every map projection distorts distance, area, shape, direction, or some combination thereof.   All maps in this Atlas are projected using NAD 83 California State Plane III, Feet.
